Ruben Lester Biography

Born on February 10, 1977 


Ruben Lester is considered one of the most important singer-songwriters in the city of Santiago de Cuba.  He is a top level graduate in the study of classical guitar.  He has achieved the Distinction of Excellence by the Provincial Center of Music ¨Miguel Matamoros¨ since 2000. Ruben is currently vice president of the provincial branch of the Hermanos Saiz Association in Santiago de Cuba. 

He has worked as a singer, composer, arranger, guitarist and bass player in the groups, La Guerrilla, Alto Riesgo, Muralla and Rubén Lester.  Ruben was recognized for his outstanding participation and contribution to traditional music given by maestro Eliades Ochoa, given on March 19, 2006.

Ruben has five produced five records, ¨El Carrusel¨ (produced by Centro Hispano Americano for Art and Culture), the compilation of the latest trova, ¨Raspadura con Ajonjolí¨ (EGREM), the anthology of new troubadours of Santiago "New Sound Santiago" (EGREM) where he worked as a singer-songwriter and music producer and was nominated for the Cubadisco 2012 award in the trova-fusion category, and the "Simple" production (Bis Music) that was also nominated for the Cubadisco 2012 award in the trova-fusion category. In addition to the disc X610Z (Existence) (Manicomio Records) with the English singer Holly Holden of the Planet X project. And his latest production 'Dime que si' under the Siboney label of EGREM year 2018.

He has shared the stage with major Cuban and international artists such as: Ben Harper, Yusa, Portishead, José Aquiles, Saxophone Quartet, Roberto Carcases, Harold López Nusa, Raúl Torres, Bernabéu, David Blanco, Alfonso X, Vanito Caballero, Telmary Días, José Achilles, Olive without Bone, José Nicolás, among others.

Ruben has participated in all of Cuba’s major festivals: los Días de la Música -Habana, Festival de las Romerías de Mayo in Holguín, Festival del Caribe, Longina, Canción Protesta, Fiesta de la Cubanía, Festival Internacional Pepe Sánchez and performed all of Cuba’s most important stages including Mella Theater, National Theater of Cuba, Cuba Pavilion, the National Palace of Fine Arts theater, Heredia Theater, Concert Hall Dolores, Hispanic American Center for Art and Culture among others.

His music has been heard across the globe: The TransMusical Festival of Paris and Rennes, France, at the Los Caminos de Santiago Festival in Santiago de Compostela and Madrid, Spain, the Cuban song for Naples and Rome, Italy. On the ReCuba Tour through Buenos Aires, La Plata and Mar del Plata in Argentina.
